Here are some answers to questions you might be asking:

What are the chances I could be pregnant?

Any time an active sperm enters the female reproductive tract, pregnancy is a possibility. Contraception reduces the “likelihood” of fertilization, but ALL forms of contraception have failure rates. You are only fertile—able to become pregnant—near the time of ovulation. If your period is regular—meaning you begin bleeding every 28 days exactly —then you probably ovulated 14 days from the beginning of your last period, or approximately mid-month. In the case that you have an irregular period—28 days one month, 31 the next, every 3 months etc.—anything other than every 28 days—then the way in which to determine when you ovulated is to count 14 days backwards from the first day your period begins.

There is some speculation as to how long a sperm can live inside a woman’s body. Some medical professionals say up to 72 hours or 3 days while others emphatically state that a sperm cannot live longer than 24 to 48 hours inside a woman’s reproductive tract. The best time to take a pregnancy test is 7-10 days after any sexual contact where sperm may have entered your vagina.

How do I know if I’m pregnant?

If you even suspect the possibility of pregnancy, you need a reliable pregnancy test. First Choice’s urine test is used for the quantitative detection of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) in the urine for early indication of pregnancy. HCG is a hormone secreted by the developing placenta shortly after fertilization. Elevated HCG levels are observable as early as 3 to 4 days after the fertilized egg has implanted in a woman’s uterus. Therefore pregnancy can be detected with this kind of test even before a woman has missed her period.
